Ashton Starr studied political science, sociology and gender and women's studies at Carleton University, then had a long stint of union organizing in the food service industry. He likes to write on labour issues, mutual aid, and community groups, but also writing social and cultural criticism of TV, film and video games.

The Leveller is a publication covering news, current events, and culture at Carleton University, the University of Ottawa, the Ottawa/Gatineau region and, to a lesser extent, the wider world. It is intended to provide readers with a lively portrait of their campus and community and of the events that give it meaning. It is also intended to be a forum for provocative editorializing and lively debate on issues of concern to post-secondary students, staff, and faculty as well as Ottawa residents.
