Hang up the phone and sit back for a couple hours of pure enjoyment. Enter a lavishing theatre fueled by audience reactions and a cast with genuine love for their art.

For February, Sock ‘n’ Buskin Theatre Company (SnB) brought the citizens of Ottawa through their rendition of RUMORS by Neil Simon. This performance was directed by recent Carleton graduate Alec Kyte and put together entirely through SnB.

The show premiered on February 6, 2025 in Southam Hall’s very own Kailash Mital Theatre. It lasted for four nighttime performances, and may never be recreated by the same team again. Kyte had the audience in hysterics; it was incredible to see his “dream” production come to life

You could see the passion on the cast members’ faces. Each line was delivered by people who wanted to be there, which is truly the most captivating part for those who pursue extracurriculars in their adulthood. A special shoutout for Michael Hart, who played the character of Lenny and performed an incredible monologue to wrap up the show.

For those interested in all parts of theatre, SnB is always open to new people auditioning and volunteering for backstage roles. When asked about getting involved with the theatre company, Kyte opened up about his many jobs over the years: “I’ve been a stagehand for Sock ‘n’ Buskin. I’ve been a set designer for Sock ‘n’ Buskin. I think that’s all a really good time.”

He also offered advice for potential actors longing to enter the community: “If you wanna try your hand at being an actor, I would say, you know just go for it.” He became involved with the theatre company by initially auditioning for Clue three years ago.

Erin Chappel, who played the part of Chris Gorman, was first involved with SnB in 2021. They shared that their audition was done over zoom and that they booked the part for Ronnie in Advance Man. Chappel has had many roles over the years and would like to tell any aspiring people wishing to join to just take the leap.

“I can promise you that you will leave the theatre having learned nothing and that the characters will leave the stage having learned nothing.”

Rumors was the perfect escape from midterms, and a feel-good show where characters don’t think and the audience doesn’t have to.

If you dislike laughter and love outrageous dramas, The Picture of Dorian Gray may be more your speed. The show will be performed the weekend of March 20th. If you’re a fan of what’s Wilde or in need of a night out, this outing could very well be perfect.

Editor’s Note: The box office is now open for The Picture of Dorian Gray running Thursday, March 20 until Sunday, March 23.
